Road to glory: How New Radiant wins the league

It all started from Dhivehi League Qualification zone 9 on April 20th against Hurriyya, but a bright start for the blues as they hammered the opponents by 5-2 and went on to drew against Victory by 0-0 in their next encounter.

Things changed afterwards, as they lost against Valencia by 2-0 before surprising all by just bagging a 2-2 draw against the new comer, Maziya. Things got really dark when they were beaten 2-3 by another minnow, Guraidhoo. Frustrated supporters encircled the team’s dressing room and called for the resignation of then coach Ahmed Niyaz.

They fought hard in their next fixtures against IFC and Eagles, clutching a 1-0 and 3-1 win respectively.

With seven matches played New Radiant were able to win three and lost two and drew two. They managed to end the qualification behind Victory, Valencia and IFC. Scoring 13 goals and conceding 11 they got 11 points, which was 4 points less than table winner Victory.

New Radiant started their Dhivehi League with a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Valencia on 5th July, but they never looked back after that and it was all three points from the rest of their encounters in round one.

Victory was beaten by 1-0 and IFC was thrashed with a 5-4 defeat, followed by Foakaidhoo and Maziya both tasted a defeat of 1-0 and 3-0 respectively. Then snatched another 1-0 win over Guraidhoo and a 7-1 victory over Mahibadhoo to end first round at the top of the league with 18 points.

It was again a 3-1 defeat against Valencia at the start of second round. But beat Guraidhoo 4-2 and Maziya 2-1 before occupying a very important three point against IFC by stunning them with 2-1.

Everything was set to decide in the last game of the tournament between Victory. A draw was enough for them to win Dhivehi League for the first time, but things looked to be out of control when Ismail Anil scored for Victory in the 81st minute. Ali Ashfaag was at the right place at the right time for the blues to score the equalizer in the extra period of the game.

Goffa lied himself down on the pitch to celebrate the goal, and confirmed later that he was fulfilling a promise.

New Radiant won 9, drew 1 and lost 2 games through out Dhivehi League and scored 29 and conceded 16 goals. They won the title with 28 points, just one point more than second positioned Victory.
