Referees on strike?
02 July 2005

Male', MALDIVES - It's believed that referees are on strike to blow any more whistle in a local tournament unless Maldives FA promise more security on them. This revealed when Dhivehi League Qualification Zone 1-8's first match cancelled at the last minute. The match between Foakaidhoo EJ and Kelaa YF scheduled to kick off at 20:30 tonight was cancelled when both teams already arrive the stadium.

Some referees said they are not in the mood to referee in local matches if FAM couldn't guaranty them security.

The main reason for this strike is believed because of the incident happened after Dhivehi League Qualification Zone 9's last match played on 30th Jun night. When Vyansa were unable to grab a point from this match against IFC comfirmed their pace for qualifying for Dhivehi League is over. Supporters and players of Vyansa tried to attack the officials after the match and showed their anger for the decision referee made in allowing IFC's second goal, which they claimed was off side.

Referee of this match, Umeedh, was evacuated from the stadium with the help of police officers and were taken home by police vehicle.

" It's not a must for us to referee, we need more security" Daily news Haveeru stated as a saying of a senior referee.

Meanwhile, Maldives FA rejected to accept Referees strike and said they delayed the match due to some problems they need to be fixed.
