India send Maldives packing

Date: 03 December 2006 | Uploaded: 10: 05 PM

Ashfaag prior to India match: He scored Maldives' only goal

Doha, QATAR - This is going to be a real hard tournament for coach Stoikov, as under his belt this is the third consecutive failure for Maldives. After a remarkable performance against Iran in the opening game of Asian Games, Maldivians hopes for the quater was high.

Most of the Maldivians awaiting for tonight's game would least expect their team losing the game and run their apartment for packing to go back home so early. But unfortunately that is the story of the night.

Maldives had a better ball possession than India through out the game, but it was the Indians who were much stronger in their attacks. With around 13 shots they made 7 out of that straight into goal. Maldives managed to get only 5 shots.

In the 24th minute, Farhaad got an open chance to shoot as Indian goal keeper miscontrolled the ball but his shot was deflected for a corner.

In 34th minute India put their name on the scoresheet when Manjeeth's shot from the center of the half went straight to the bottom corner of the goal. Imran could have easily managed to save the ball, but it seems he was not prepared for the ball. It went under his arm.

Muhaimin also managed to take a shot in the 36th minute, but his shot was saved by the keeper.

A minute later, Ashfaaq beat three opponent defenders and shoot in to the bottom corner of the goal. Indian keeper tried to save the ball, but failed as it was deflected by an indian player.

At half time Stoikov substituted Arif (Baka) with Shinaz Hilmy, who was injured during a practice match in Oman. Ibrahim Fazeel (Oppo) who was playing upfront connecting superbly with Ashfaaq was shifted to the midfield and it lost the tempo of the Maldives Game.

Instead India started to pressurize the defense of Maldives. In the 49th minute, Imran came out of his position to save an Indian corner, but could not reach the ball and Baichung Bhutia headed to the goal. Fortunately for the Maldivians, Ashfaan managed to clear the ball superbly from the goal line.

In the 50th minute Pradeep also managed to get a long shot from outside the penalty area, but hits the post.

Maldives team managed to threaten the opponent's goal by a free kick from Fazeel, but his effort went wide from the goal post.

In the 65th minute, Fazeel once again go deep into the Indian half beating two defenders made his shot, which went wide by inches.

Subash nets the winner for India in the 90th minute, a lovely build up by Baichung Bhutia found the free striker who controlled the ball and found the empty net. Ashfaan who was marking from the left side was marking Baichung Bhutia at that time.

Maldives will play their last game against Hong Kong on 6th December prior to their departure back to home. Hong Kong grabbed one point against India in the opening game.

We all must agree the reality. Our expectation is too high..Lets take India.
India football population is much more than our country population, than image in how many good players they will have.
People can comment, but its 100 times better to think...
Dont blame always coach, see how they play in club, how disipline players, see the facilities provided by ministry,....
One thing we must be pround is we have now very good young players...Umair,Ashfan,Baka....where they come from...FROM FAM YDP.
Think before shout..........
We are pround of our team. - Rifath

atleast we want 3 if not one point in this tournoment. remember Hong Kong is much better than us. they ranked above us, and they produced better results than us. individual skills will not benifit unless there is a good teamwork - duch

It doesn’t look like a team. Off course we do have individual skilled players in the squad such as Ashfaq, Oppo and many more, but they are not playin as a team. There is no team spirit. And most of all I wonder why they are playin long balls to ashfaaq. Cant they do short passes. Also it wasn’t the best arrangement by the coach. The midfield area can be arranged much more stronger and tighter than it was last nite. These players need motivation, Team spirit althought they are individual players. And in my opinion I thk there are better players than Oppo for free kick taking. - Valencia fan

Very much disappointed boys. In the first period of last night clash with India, i saw Maldivian national team playing neat, skillful football, but in the second period, i've no idea who, those eleven men on the field are. That's not the way boys, to represent your own country. Have you seen the way Indins tried to get three points. - Hassan

We shud hav beaten them...but wen shinaz came everythin changed..as the tempo ov de game was gone...to be true maldives wasnt attacking as much as they shud hav after oppo came to midfield...we cant say maldivians were weaker than indians the were better but as shinaz couldnt penetrate as much as oppo did maldivian attakx came useless...guess we need a better coach and a better league- --naii--

yet another blunder! another goal in the dying minutes.how often hav v seen that! is it really the coach or the players concentration? i think our players just never want to calm down. got to learn from the mistakes. the two games weve lost is due to diffensive errors. as far as bakaa is concerned i dont think he had a good first half lost the posession plenty of times, he was meant to b subd but i think maldives shud play to there strength, there strength is not in the flanks or playing long balls every time from our half, but through the middle of the oppositions diffence. just dont know y we are not playing to our strengths theres stil lot to improve we need long range shooters too! i think we hav super players but thats not enough to win, we need a coach who knows how to squeeze out every bit of talent in our players. i dont think its happening now? if we can do that i think we can b the futballing powerhouse in this region. if som guys are forgetin we are ranked number one in this region even now, not india there is a reason y we are topping the list. - becks

yea, its time 4 a new coach. v hav seen how Stoikov sets his team.the thing in his tactics is that v cant see a gud game plan as v have seen durin the era of gomez. stoikov jus throws his players to the field like he dosent have any intention on winning. maldivian players have talent in them, but if the man incharge cannot make the players a team v cannot produce a good result nor a fine tune in our game play. all v have seen during stoikov's era is the individuality of the players.so just get a better coach evn if it costs big money, wat v need is not a big FA office and executive chairs, v just need a better coach. and the players need to be more disciplined - the 10

Well I think it's not the coach to blame always, Sports Ministry, FAM, and the rest of the people connected with the national team are to be blamed. First of all let’s see; when national team first started practice I don't think half of the team was present, I heard officials when to some players home to beg them to come, if they are not present they should be penalized for their actions as they are going to represent their own nation. I strongly think coach was not the person to blame this time.
YDP; we have never seen a single player emerging from the pool to club standards, WHY?
I have got more to say, but this time FAM is to be blamed. - faith
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think FAM shud be more orginised, and try to find good coach. i see the coach made wrong changes in every match. In SAAF Games. He made tacticle & positional change against Sri Lanka, Two mid-fild player shift as two forward, we lost taht match, but we dominated the game in possetion. last night the samething happend, coach take bakaa to bench after taht maldive team get under pressure becorce of that india get more free space in the mid-filed. After 20 mins of 2nd half india dominated the match, maldives in under pressure but I cud not see any tacticle or positional change to release that pressure.
So please find some on who can manage our speedy players as National coach. - ishu
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

actually maldivian's hopes are too high....maldives is not gud than indians thats why we lost the game...always dont blame stoicov....ahfaq allso not serious..palyers has to be serious... - arif
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ou teaam is not fully prepared for this tournoment, so not only coach to be blamed. We had very little practice and went to Oman. I think we must get ready well to bring success to us on other tournoments. So get ready well for Olympics Our hopes are with you.
We could have change our coach too next time. If we couldn't find a good one then Mattey can also lead us. Actually FAM is not good. They must search players from atolls. There are many good and skillfull players in atolls, they can bring to top level of Maldives by good practice. During zone league 1-8, most of the players are from 2nd division, this is very bad problem as it restricts formation of new players. I think FAM should think about it and could alow only 3 player from outside the island to play on the teams and they also should help small teams to improve financially. VDP should also be carried on as many atolls as possible to get new players. Then only we can get better players. I think FAM should think about it - giggs

what i have seen in the last night clash against india is lack of confidence and motivation. Stoickov should not substitute arif(baka) as he was playing vigourousely. It was really a technical error. In football nobody will see how much fouls u made or against u. but everybody will see the result. so maldivian should be more aggressive than now as football is physical game. Nobody is going to give you a medal for lesser fouls. Inida was very aggressive, motivated and they were thirsty for the win. so they won it. Believe me or not though our players are technically little bit better than indians, we need to improve certain areas like, long range shots and possession and arial marking rather than man to man defence. Bichung Bhutia were magnificient some years ago, so our defencing strategy should not rely on how to stop him. wot i wondered was when he gets the ball both ashfan and assad were around where the far post, the player on flank was unmarked. so the one way or otherway stoikove should be sacked and a new coach should be introduced. - ismail

Our expectations are too high. We always expects to equalise with big teams like Iran after korea match. Our players, supporters and coach also thinks our players are more talanted than all the other south asian players. But on last night's game India played much better than Maldives during last 20 minutes.I also belive that some Maldivians like Asfaaq and Oppo are skillful, but their fitness is not as much as Indians. During last 20 of game Maldivian players seems to be so much tired. I think Indians are in much better form than us, because they played in Asian Cup too.One of the major problem in Maldivian football is the players don't get any rest during football seasons.                They always have continious football tournoments. I think this is the time to change Maldivian football calander.FAM should think about it.
Allah is only one who can give success, but He will not give success unless    we put more effort.I think nigther coach nor players to be blame. Insa'Allah we will get success  if we put more effor during Olympics and other tournoments. - benzo
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

we saw the same strategy and same game play as maldives did in last years saff championship. With stoikov, midfield does not exist. give the ball to ashfag for him to think of something. Against india maldives lacked motivation, speed, connection, passing, flow of the game and spirit. No wonder there are more officials in the maldives contingent than athletes. they are all having a great holiday at doha. im happy they all will have to come back soon. - al
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe its time we get a better coach to manage the maldivian national team. This is the third time we had this problem with the same coach at the helm. Wonder when will FAM come to their senses and spend their money on a worthwile coach. It is simply disappointing that we cannot defeat the indians, though we have technically superior players. Its just a matter better game planning and bringing out team cohesion. =mondae=
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

why can't maldives beat india!!!!
because the coach mad that change with lost the tempo of the game.
hes too old for maldives
get a new coach. that will do the trick - R.carlos
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

why we always believe we are good team. i think we are not good as India. they have good team them Maldives. After South Korean match we thought we are very good. but not that much....
need improvement in nations best sports. Also need good coaching team. - wasinttey
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's running late for a change. Rather than a central forward position ashfaaq should be played down the right side of the feild while shinaz and assad can play upfront. most of the goals ashfaq has scored came from that side with dribbling. As in the central forward position it seems he is having a hard time to find pace.He also needs a good and accurate supplier since in my opinion it concentrates him on the match and get into the match. Secondly our players need motivation. What we have seen in this was demotivation. At last but not least to be frank, stoikov isnt the one for our national team. - Blues
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

why are you always blaming stoikov. are the players great friends of maldive soccer. hes certainly not my friend. but i feel you have something against him - gert
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now its time to send him back... find a replacement... our team can do much better then this... - RedDevils
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simply select some other Coach for the National Team.
