Male’, MALDIVES – Indonesia’s Perispura Jayapura has secured a place in the second round of AFC Cup today after beating New Radiant Sports Club by 2-0 here in Male’, Maldives. Boaz scored the two goals for Persipura Jayapura.

Persipura Jayapura started the match very well and created some good chances. In the 22nd minute Wanggai tried a shot from outside the penalty area, but the weak shot goes in to keeper’s hand.

Boaz broke the deadlock in the 36th minute from a through pass from Bio into the bottom corner of the goal.

Three minutes before the break Persipura’s goalkeeper made a superb save to punch away the free kick from Umair just outside the box.

Persipura’s Boaz doubled the lead with a fine header inside the box in the second half.

Eleven minutes later, Boaz fired a good shot from inside the penalty area but Imran denied the attempt.

Three minutes before the normal time Imran made another good save, he dived and punched Boaz’s powerful shot from close range.

As I have said before, without Ashfaq, New radiant is just nothing.

Yet another opportunity missed to make the mark on this cup. How long will AFC tolerate the poor performances from the two clubs of Maldives before they make total assessment our standing in the tournament and give one slot, worse still, no slot at all. You never know, persistent sub-standard showing by our team may cost us a place in AFC cup. The reality may hit us sooner then we think if this trend continues. By the way last year New Radiant chairman Ali Waheed pledged his whole-hearted support for this tournament and promised to strengthen the squad to do better then last year. What happened?

As usual lack of fitness resulted in all this. Although i must admit that compared to the game New Radiant played against Churchill Brothers, much as improved and they were able to play good football for maybe 20 or 25 minutes of the first half and that was about it. I hope the alarm bells are ringing and the people in FAM and Club teams are thinking about improving fitness of these players for the Challenge Cup. We have 47 more days for the Challenge Cup and some serious tuning up is required. I think its time for national team players in Maziya to be included in regular trainings of National Team as Maziya is already out of AFC cup and there is no point in just reserving them for club practice. Its time for these players to start concentrating on winning the Challenge Cup. Fitness will be the Key. Take it seriously.

I can already imagine our tactics for the Challenge Cup. Ashfaq will be our only fit player. We will abandon the passing game and adopt our favourite gameplane: Long ball to Ashfaq and hope for the best!
