Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national team coach Drago Mamic has said that he is in contact with captain Ali Ashfaq and he is performing very well in Malaysian Premier League.

Speaking at a press conference held at FAM House today, Drago said that Ashfaq is an important player and he is doing very well.

“Yes I have a good contact with Ali Ashfaq and he is performing very well and scored a hat-trick in his last game. And I hope he will be in very good form when he joins with us.”

Drago also said that they are going to start the practice today and he has selected a 30 players squad for the national team.

“Today we are having the first training session and with the help of these kind of training sessions we can test the players.”

“We didn’t include the players from Maziya and New Radiant. We want to increase the fitness level of other players who are not playing with their teams at the moment.”

“New Radiant has 11 players and from Maziya we have selected 10 players for the national team and the other players are from other clubs. We have a squad of 30 players.”

He also added that he must have a very close eye on the players from Maziya and New Radiant as the majority of the players are from those two clubs.

“We must concentrate on these two clubs. I was keep on saying that we have enough time to prepare for the tournament. Because the majority of the players are coming from these two clubs and they are playing competitive games.”

“Myanmar starting their preparation of 12th April because their players are from different clubs and still they are playing their championships.”

Drago also reiterated that he has enough time to prepare for the tournament and he is against the philosophy of three months of preparation for a tournament if the players are playing competitive games.

“I am against the philosophy of a three months preparation and the best thing is to prepare during the three weeks in case if the players are playing in strong competitions.”

Although I agree that many coaches blame lack of time available after an unsuccessful competitio, I do believe it's important to send positive (but convincing) messages to the supporters and in this case, to our nation. A positive attitude can motivate players and the fans so I like his rhetoric and public messages so far.

As a Malaysian from Penang, I feel very proud with Ashfaq participation in our national football league with police force and we are very excited every time to see his greatness act in field. Congratulations Maldives because own local players like Ashfaq.

Why these guys take our comments and concerns out of context???? We call for a long trainings (more than 1 month) BECAUSE we know even if the players play in our National Football League they will not be having enough fitness to compete in any regional tornament like Challenge Cup. We also know that it is not good and not even feasible to have such long trainings with national team IF our players are playing in competitive PROFESSIONAL football in professional football clubs. What we are saying that simply is not happeing here in Maldives. So our NT coach has to start from scretch every time a tournament is there. ::: How can one simply say 6 or so matches in AFC Cup is good enough competitive football???!!! it is becoming more likely that this guy is simply a day dreamer!!! And the biggest joke in the article "...and he has selected a 30 players squad ..." Grago how can you select this team??!!! Just simply say Suzain has give the list, end of it!!!!
