Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national team striker Ali Ashfaq is waiting for the release from his current club, Malaysia’s super league club PDRM FA according to Football Association of Maldives.

Speaking to maldivesoccer.com general secretary of FAM, Hussain Jawaz said that they are waiting for his release from the club and they have requested for his release.

“We have requested for his release but still we didn’t get the permission. As we all know that it’s not a must for the club to release the players as this is not a senior team tournament according to FIFA rules. “

If it’s a senior tournament the club must release him before 14 days but for this it all depends on the club.”

Meanwhile Maldives Olympic Committee’s general secretary Ahmed Marzooq also said that they are also in contact with PDRM FA to get the release for him.

“We are also in talks with the club of Ashfaq to get the release for him. We want him to be in the team as he is the Maldives Olympic Committee’s ambassador.”

Speaking to maldivesoccer.com ace striker, Ashfaq said that he is in a contract with a club and if they release him for the under 23 national team he will join with them.

“I am in a contract with PDRM and if they release me for the national duty I will happily join with the team.”

Maldives U 23 team will depart to South Korea on 11th of this month and their first match will be against Thailand on 15th of this month. Maldives will player their second match on 18th against Indonesia and the last match of the group E is against East Timor on 22nd of this month.

“We are also in talks with the club of Ashfaq to get the release for him. We want him to be in the team as he is the Maldives Olympic Committee’s ambassador.” What crap is Marzooq is talking about? How on earth a player is subservient to a committee’s obligation just because he is their ambassador. Ashfaq’s ambassadorship doesn’t mean he is your servant, he is on a contract of another team, it is not compulsory on the part of PDRM FA to him release as it is not senior team tournament, and they have important knockout matches coming up. So why try to pressure Ashfaq’s club now, at the last moment, before clarifying his availability beforehand. It just does not seem, miscommunication and confusion is the hallmark of FAM and MOC.

These people in charge of running sports associations in Maldives have no idea about the professional sporting environment. FAM, Olympic Committee etc. might not consider the Dhivehi League to be important, but in Malaysia, they take domestic football very, very seriously. I am sure that PDRM's management are baffled by how desperate FAM and MOC are to release their 29-year-old star player, who is under contract on a very large salary, to an under-23 tournament. They are embarrassing our football in front of other countries. What sort of message does this give our younger footballers? That they need to wait for international experience, even in junior tournaments until Ali Ashfaq retires?
