Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national team’s three key players has decided to not to travel to Bangladesh for the Bangbandhu Gold Cup due to various reasons.

National team captain Ali Ashfaq (Dhagey) announced in his Facebook page that he was unable to get the release from his current club.

“I was unable to get release from the club (PDRM) to participate in the Bangbandhu Gold Cup with the national team.”

Midfielder Mohamed Arif (Bakaa) said that he won’t be joining with the national team due to personal commitments.

“Due to personal commitments, I won't be joining the national team in the upcoming Gold Cup held in Bangladesh. I wish all the players and the team all the best.” Bakaa said to Maldivesoccer.com

Meanwhile promising young defender, Amdhan Ali will not travel with the team as he is in discussions with Malaysian Super League club PDRM and he will depart to Malaysia for a trial within the next two or three days.

Previously experienced keeper Imran Mohamed has said that he will not join with the team for the Gold Cup to allow young players to gain more experience.

well.. its a good decision by dhagey. we all love dhagey. ur d best of best. There is no one who can replace you. I think coach should resign. we dont want "youngstars". we want champion. In saff suzuki cup Coach should take responsibility of lowest quality football that i have ever seen in recent decades against this region teams. see how india played against us. they dominated the game we were unable to hold the ball even. Bakaa was just at the bench against physical india. #Shame

Dhagey's predicament is a case of a cat running after two rats - he got neither! Dhagey was conserving himself for this tournament and it effectively meant he was not able to give his 100 per cent in saff suzuki cup. All due to a very visionary FAM! Where in the world you play tournaments one after the other? Is this some sort of an experiment and the players are being used as guinea pigs?
