Male', MALDIVES - Maldives national team captain Ali Ashfaq has decided not to join the under 23 team that left today for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in South Korea.

Both FAM and Maldives Olympic Committee tried to get the release for the striker from his current club, PDRM FA of Malaysia super league.

It appears that some of the Malaysian players of PDRM were selected for the Malaysian U23 team but the club refused to release the players as the club will play in the quarter finals of Malaysian Cup this month.

Earlier national team keeper Imran also turned down the opportunity to join under 23 team to give young players the chance to gain international experience.

Dhagey took the right decision, Marey got the right retribution. But dhagey you must stop smoking, you have few years left in your career, to maximize your chance of playing as long as possible at the top level, you have to stop nicotine in your body. If you can’t stop them in your vain, it is possible all your effort to be in the top will go in vein.

Good decision by Ashfaq, in my opinion. This is a win-win situation for Maldivian football, as Ashfaq now gets the opportunity to play in the latter stages in the Malaysia FA Cup, one of the most keenly contested cup competitions in Asian football. This also gives a chance for some of our young strikers to get a taste of international football before getting drafted to the senior squad. It will be interesting to see how we fare in the tournament.

I respect and was glad to see dhagey And imrans decision to Not go with the under 23 team. I feel FAM should also have their goals set properly. In my opinion these matches will only be used to gain much needed experience for our new crop of players and for that reason, we shouldn't have included any overage players in this squad. I feel that unless we are fighting for a medal, we should train the youngsters on limited opportunities we get. If saff games I support including three over age players as we have potential of winning in this region. As for the senior players, I feel that their decision to not take part must be taken before the initial squad list is filed. Or else the chance for a younger player to show his talent will be lost. Dhagey has taken the right decision but he should have allowed the team time to strategize with out him. I doubt if another young player was given the chance to go in place of dhagey. Would be good if MS can shed some light on it. Best wishes to maldivian football and it's development.
