Male’, MALDIVES – The normalisation committee formed by FIFA has decided to rebrand Dhivehi League as Dhivehi Premier League.

Chairman of normalisation committee Mohamed Shaveed said in a press conference held at FAM today that with this new change the club competing in the league would get huge benefits.

“The teams in the league would get huge benefits and we are working to give one million Maldivian Ruffiyyaa as cash price for the champion team. And the bottom team would also get MVR 100k, which is the cash price for the champion team now.”

He also reiterated that these clubs would have to agree with the terms and which includes that each club must to be registered to represent an particular area.

“The clubs must represent an area where the club belongs and the FA would assist them to increase their fan base within that area.”

Shaveed also said that the main sponsor of the league would be a well-known company from Qatar such as Ooredoo, Qatar Foundation or Qatar Airways.

FAM have decided to play two rounds in the league from next year instead of three rounds and the bottom team will relegate to the second division automatically and the champion of the second division will qualify for the league while runner-up of second division and second bottom team of the premier league will play a play-off match to secure a spot on top league.

The normalisation committee has also decided to introduce Pomis Cup and will start the next year’s season on February with the Pomis Cup.

Big thanks to Normalization Committee. You have given a new glimmer of hope for our badly mismanaged football so long on deathbed. Change in the format of the league, model clubs to represent a particular locality and the easy route for lower division clubs to get promotion for higher divisions, these were the changes football had been crying for so long. We entrusted FAM with a wrong man at wrong time when our football was at a bad phase, their thoughts were drawn to elsewhere which only plunged it into further disarray. Hopefully these new measures will inject a new lease of life to our football establishment and fill a stadium now haunted by silence.

True, it is the way domestic leagues are conducted all over the world. But at this moment is it possible for an away and home format. Will valencia or New Radiant be abe to build there own stadia? Both these clubs belong to Male' and do you have space in Male' for even to build a half a stadium. So the concept of how real football league is played will remain a dream for now, may be for another many years.

I want the home-away system as well, but first let's support the steps taken by FAM for now. One step at a time: give more representation to the atolls, let the clubs build a fanbase and provide them with viable revenue channels, develop stadiums with grass pitches and spectator stands, create a proper ticketing system, organize a viable logistics plan to enable clubs to transport themselves across the country to play matches. We still have a very long way to go before seeing our dream of watching a home-away Dhivehi Premier League, so saying you don't support the NC's praiseworthy steps is very short-sighted. It might take another decade or so for our football to properly bloom, so we fans need to be a little more patient.

Wonderdul news! Also heard news that FAM are changing the 3rd Division format to include champion clubs from zones 1-8 (atolls) and zone 9 (government offices recreation club champions). This proves that FAM were capable of it all this time and Ilham and Azim were using budgetary restrictions as an excuse to not do anything.

Ilham's concept of running FAM was when a new season starts let somebody stick A4 size paper with the name of the teams playing and the timings. He doesnt care if anybody come to watch the match or not, or if anything needs to be done to stop the dwindling number of supporters to the stadium. What he unfailingly does not forget to bring is one of the former presidential candidates along with him at stratagic times as a chief guest. Remember the challenge cup held in maldives!

Well done NC, Looking forward to ur good work to take Maldives soccer to higher levels, Calling on You to probe in Victory sports clubs whose foreign players are stranded in male without salary or food money, these are the kind of issues that will soil the image of our football, how can vicotry sports club owe 3month of salary to foreign players and local players, Now the story is going viral and soiling our football, NC take action against members of the club and if possible sanction them against next season if they don't solve this on time..
