Male', MALDIVES - A late strike from Yangon United’s striker Kwaw Ko Ko earned Yangon a point as their match against Maziya Sports and Recreation ended 1-1 today.

Ahmed Rasheed gave Maziya the lead in the 63 minute of the match played in the National Stadium. Ahmed Rasheed showed his sharpness in front of goal as he executed a cross from substitute Hussain Niyaz Mohamed.

Maziya was expecting to grab three points from their first home game. However Yangon equalized in the 87 minuted through Ko Ko. Ko Ko got to the end of a good ball from Ki Lin and calmly slotted the ball past goal keeper Imran Mohamed.

After a dull first 10 minutes, Yangon created the first chance in the 12th minute. But Marcelo couldn't connect with the ball in the box.

In the 21st minute Nashid delivered a good cross after beating a defender in the box but Yangon defenders blocked the ball before Imaaz could reach it.

In the 39th minute Ahmed Rasheed's header in the box was denied by the post. Yaamin's shot from the second ball went wide.

Ahmed Rasheed broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute from a good volley inside the box when substitute player Hussain Niyaz supplied the ball from the right flank after beating two players.

Ismail Easa and Ahmed Nashid missed some good goal scoring opportunities after the opening goal.

Yangong's Ko Ko leveled the game just four minutes before the normal time from a descent strike inside the box.

I guess FAM sees where the real problem is. These clubs go to these highly competitive afc cup matches even before season starts, without domestic football and badly needing match sharpness. So one way to give these teams a better glimmer of hope is for FAM to start new season well ahead of AFC cup tournament. Will they?

Definitely an option well-worth considering.

I remember Shaweed very loudly proclaiming that the domestic season would start early in order to give the AFC Club playing clubs a head start in the continental competition. Unfortunately, FAM have always had a problem with walking the talk. Their lack of forethought meant they sent the national team to the Bangabandhu Gold Cup, leaving players without a rest since last season and hence delaying the start of this season.

I think Maziya lost 2 points because of the attacking players being complacent in finishing the moves. There were at least two chances where the attacking player should have gone for the die-hard approach and finished the final ball, instead of being over-confident and taking too many touches. I do think the midfield did well in creating some excellent chances and the defenders (including one fine tackle by Dinev) and Imran saved the team from blushes several time in the game. One more thing - Maziya's management (and New Radiant) need to be more creative and invest in attracting fans to the matches. How about inviting some of the Maldivian Idol's performers and other such talented people to do a couple of pieces in the pre-match few minutes and during half-time? Without such initiatives, you cannot attract spectators - consider big marketing and promotional activities. I think the clubs need to be more forward-looking if we are ever to benefit from the so-called home advantage.
