Male’, MALDIVES – President of Football Association of Maldives (FAM), Ali Azim praised the National Football Team and said that FAM is happy for their performance at the Nehru Cup held at India.

Maldives concluded the five nations Cup as the third team, winning two games and losing two. Maldives won against Syria and Nepal while lost against Champions India and Runners-up Cameroon.

Speaking about the Nehru Cup Azim noted the decision of Head Coach to include junior players in the team.

“In general, FAM is happy with the performance of our National Team at Nehru Cup. They did a good job”.

“I would like to highlight the Head Coach’s decision include junior players in the team. Replacement of senior players by youth at the cup will be a positive thing for the upcoming tournaments”.

Maldives performed well in the Nehru Cup where, three new players scored for the first time in their career for the National Team. Assadulla Abdulla, Ismail Easa and Ahmed Rasheed of Maziya were among the newly joined players who scored in the Nehru Cup.

Maldives Head Coach, Istavan Urbanyi noted the inclusion of junior players in the National Team even before the departure for the cup.

“The top four goal scorers (of Dhivehi League) are in the selection, and the good news is all four of them are young”.

“They have a good future. Ammadey, Assadulla, Umair and Dhagey. I don’t have to tell about those players, everyone knows who they are”.

India won the Nehru Cup by beating African giant Cameroon in the penalty shoot-out.

Urbanyi's "younger generation" idea seems to work well. Like I've always said, this was a drama played by the AIFF set for their team to win at the end. Who cares, honestly? We're proud of our team more than their people are proud of theirs. Go Maldives! :)

Since FAM was never going to arrange any friendly fixtures for the national team, we should take these sort of invitational tournaments with both hands whenever we get the opportunity. I hope this is not the end of the national team's matches for this year. Although somehow I doubt it...

india is cheater in football, we watched indian's game in afc challenge cup kathmandu, indian return with without goal scoring. they are just like in home they are lion and in jungle they are like dog Maldives played better than Indian but indian awarded a unnecessary penalty and another two goals was flick goals. if indian not awarded penalty, score might be india 0 maldives 0. we watched the match between syria vs india, syrian dominated the pitch but indian were lucky to score goal by nepali blooded sunil. ball possession was indian 43 syrians 57. indians thougt they are super natural in south asian football but i never been agreed. maldives and nepal are the real footballing nation in south region. see last year saff championship after 70 minutes indian blooded singaporean referee destroyed Afghanistan dream to be champion. bullshit indians.
