Male’, MALDIVES – Singapore’s LionsXII has thrashed New Radiant Sports Club by 3-1 in a heated match in the ongoing People’s Cup today. The match ended with two red cards and 10 yellow cards.

LionsXII’s Firdaus broke the deadlock in the 6th minute from a wonderful volley just outside the box.

In the 22nd minute New Radiant keeper made a good save to block the shot from Amri just outside the box.

Three minutes after the break LionsXII doubled the lead from a perfect header from Madhu insid the box. It was the defender's second goal of the tournament.

In the 58th minute Amri increased the margin for LionsXII from a lose ball from Shifan. He lost the ball as the last defender and Amri received the ball and dribbled inside the box and beat the keeper before he scored from it.

Six minutes before the normal time Niyaz scored for New Radaint.

New Radiant coach Mika said after the match that in the last 15 minutes of the game his players played well.

“During the first half we didn’t perform well but in the last fifteen minutes of the game our players played very well and if they perform like that throughout the game we can win it.”

“When we introduced our young players they performed very well and they knew how we want to play. So for the next game I have to think why they are not starting the game.”

On the other hand Singapore LionsXII coach Fandi said that they played as a team and that was the only difference between the two sides.

“We knew that they have very good players and we played as a team and that was the difference between two teams.”

Singapore LionsXII got three points from two games while New Radiant lost their two games in the tournament.

I wonder what the coach did say in the half time team talk. The whole teams was so advanced, defenders were holding too high line exposing them to counter attacks. Their last two goals that came in the second half were avoidable goals. For their second goal none of our players did close down the person who took the cross nor was the player who headed the goal was well marked. For the third goal our defenders were sleeping, too casual in their marking. We lost today because we did not do the most important thing if you are holding a line. That is if you are never vigilent to maintain the offside trap and not fully concentrated to their counterattacks you will concede goals.

I struggled to see New Radiant's gameplane. There were so many spaces between the players and their movement wasn't great. Often either all the players were inside their own half or near the opposition penalty area, forcing the defenders to punt long, pointless balls that went nowhere useful. They also don't have anyone who could hold the ball up front. I hope this is a fitness issue that will be resolved in time for the AFC Cup, but the fact of the matter is that New Radiant has a lot of work to do. Maziya showed much more promise in the two games, with neat intricate plays between players. Their new foriegn signings also appear to have settled into the team very quickly. They have a gameplan which they understand well enough. All New Radiant appear to be doing is chasing after long balls.

I think what you see is the huge void left by the absence of Sentey and Umair's loss of form which has been since AFC Challenge Cup in May 2014. I hear people say class is permanent and form is temporary. In this case, both appear to have departed him for good.
