Ahmed Imaz scored the winning goal against Seychelles tonight.

Reunion – Maldives national football team beat Seychelles by 2-1 in a hard fought match tonight in the ongoing Indian Ocean Island Games. Mohamed Umair and Ahmed Imaz scored the two goals for the Maldives.

Velizar Popov changed his team after the defeat to Mayotte and put Rilwan Waheed on the bench for this match.

Seychelles opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the game from a silly defensive mistake from Amdhan Ali.

Eight minute later Maldives skipper Akram Abdul Gani hits the woodwork from a stunning shot just out side the box.

Mohamed Umair leveled the game for the Maldives when referee awarded a penalty to Maldives when Ashad Ali was brought down inside the box.

Six minutes before the break referee awarded another penalty to Maldives but Seychelles keeper saves the spot kick from Umair this time.

Popov introduced Ai Fasir during the second half after replacing Ahmed Imaz.

In the 54th minute Hamza missed a golden opportunity to take the lead from a good shot inside the box from a decent cross from Ashad.

Maldives created very good chances in the last ten minutes of the game and Akram hits the woodwork twice.

With this win Maldives has a chance to confirm a place in the semi final of the tournament. Maldives got four points from two games. Madagascar won the match against Mayotte tonight after penalty shoot out.

Congratulations to players for the way they have responded to our coach’s displeasure over the behaviour of certain players. To have beaten Seychelles on a foreign soil all the more better because we could not do it the last time around. We can see there are some promising players, given proper guidance, will grow into big talents who will play for national team for many years to come. All we need is to cultivate the right atmosphere, a professional setup at club and in the league and at FAM where players maintain a high level of discipline and take their career seriously. Many other national and club coaches have expressed the same misgivings about players expressed by Popov. He has taken up the issue at the right time. We must stamp out this deadly disease at its root and the time is now.
