Maldives lost on penalties

Reunion – Maldives women’s football team lost their first game against Mayotte by 4-3 on penalties in the opening game of 9th Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion.

The two teams were leveled with a 1-1 draw after the full time and they must decide a winner of the match as they are having three teams in the group as per the tournament.

Mayotte took the lead in the 20th minute but Aiminath Areesha leveled the game from a wonderful volley inside the box.

Mayotte keeper saves the penalty from Aiminath Zahiya while Aminath Shamila’s penalty hits the cross bar. Captain Fadhuwa Zahir, Mariyam Mirfath and Aishath Maahin scored from penalties.

Maldives to play their second game on Sunday against Seychelles.
