Maldives starts preparation for IOIG

Male’, MALDIVES - Maldives national football team has started preparation last night for the upcoming 2015 Indian Ocean Island Games to be held in Reunion later this month.

Bulgarian born coach, Velizar Popov started the preparation with 25 players and he has previously said that he will reduce the number to 20 before departing to Reunion.

He also said that this is the time for young players and Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion will be the chance for them.

“It is time for the young players to show their skills and Imran, Bakaa and Ashfaq will not play for the national team always and we need to replace them.”

Maldives lies in group A along with Seychelles, Mayotte and Madagascar. Maldives team will be leaving to Reunion 30th of this month and their first game is on 31st of this month against Mayotte.

It's called professionalism, something we Maldivians are blissfully unaware of. Popov is trying to instill this particular feature into our culture. Where previously we went into games, whether friendlies, tournaments or qualifiers with a hastily assembled group of players, Popov is attempting to teach us the importance of organized preparation. Unfortunately, the Maldivian way of doing things at the last minute will be difficult to get rid of.
