Maldives national team players during today's practice session

Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national football team has started preparation for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Qatar and Hong Kong today in Milo Turf Ground.

Speaking to Maldivesoccer.com, national team coach Popov said that the three training sessions in Male will be based on fitness.

“The first training today was positive and we don’t have serious injures , all the players are fully concentrated and ready for what we are going to do.”

“This 3 days here in Male including today will work a bit for resistance because I'm not happy with the physical level of the players.”

“Even in today’s training the performance was not ideal but at least all the players make effort and nobody give up.”

Popov also said that he will start his normal training sessions in South Korea.

“In Korea I will arrange two training sessions per day and in the morning it will be physical work with more interval running and sprints work , and in the evening it will be the technical and tactical work. And will finish the day with gym session and recovery.”

Popov also said that he is planning to play one friendly match in South Korea on 29th May.

Maldives will leave to South Korea on Tuesday for a ten day training camp.

Maldives will play their first game against Qatar on 11th June and the second match will be against Hong Kong on 16th June.

Popov finally gets a chance to get the squad alone. Knowing him, he will really push the players to the limit, so slackers can't automatically guarantee a place in the starting XI. With all distractions out of the way, everyone can fully focus on the task ahead.

That's a good sign! Also, encouraged by the focus on fitness, which I think will make a massive difference in the 2 games.
