Male’, MALDIVES – Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal has said that the Maldives will start the renovation work of the stadiums before the deadline given by AFC to host the AF Challenge Cup next year at the Maldives.

“We have already started the work to host the Challenge Cup and we are confident that we can finish the work before the deadline.”

Meanwhile, Vice President of FAM, Abdul Muhusin Hameed said that they are confident that they can start the work before the deadline.

“We are confident that we can start the renovation work before the deadline. We will sit with the ministry to finalize everything and hope that we can start the work in the first week of December.”

AFC Competitions Committee has proposed to move the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup to the Philippines from Maldives if the latter does not start required renovation work by December 15, 2013 today.

But a final decision would be made by the executive committee of AFC for the proposal from the Competitions Committee.

Meanwhile former president of FAM, Ali Azim, who is an executive committee member of AFC, said in a tweet today that he will do everything possible to host the tournament in the Maldives.

You are already behind schedule and on course for a tough job in completing the necessary projects for such a big international event! If we are thorough, we need to aim to complete the whole project at least 2 weeks before the opening ceremony.

Renovation work can be started before the deadline, that is the easy part. The important thing is that the work be completed well before the tournament kicks off.

It is sad to see these people take this tournament so lightly. Yes, their big mouth will say otherwise but this is the truth. If they had taken this seriously they should have started the works by now.::: Anyway, It is very important to finish this work as soon as possible, so that we can show AFC our readness to host these kind of tournaments. And it is very important to keep stadiums full during all the matches, not just the matches that Maldives play. Seeing empty stadiums is very negetive thing for the organisors. So i urge the supporters in Addu to go to the stadium, no matter what team is playing and just enjoy the games that are played there.
