I don't understand what goes through the mind of our defenders sometimes. "Oh, let's all wait here and see what he does next...and he's scored a goal!". The two goals conceded were typically poor. I think we need more defensive drills implemented within our youth development structures, because our defenders struggle with even the most basic defending at times. The days when the intelligent game reader Assad, or the powerful, bullish Jameel, and the energetic Ammaty running down the flanks have been replaced by some hesitant, nervous rabbits caught in headlights as our defenders. Something has obviously gone very wrong somewhere over the last decade and we need to find the root cause of it, because without a solid defensive core we won't be able to reach the next level.

Maldives defence was in six and seven every time cambodia was on attack. Defensive organisation was very average . When you hold a risky high line and if you are not able to use offside trap effectively you run the risk of easy counter attacks. It means you are vulnerable to make more mistakes. Maldives did not do much to rectify it, defence was nervy for much of the time, and their anywhere-will-do-kind-of hasty clearance put the team under more pressure. Wing players lack of support in such situations further stretched the team and made maldives more prone to avoidable mistakes. Under Riki defence seems to be as shaky as an old man’s tooth!

Was looking forward to hear from coach after this hard-fought win. Coming nothing , not in the form of thanking his players for their grit and determination till the last minute, to grind a result, is surprising. Does he really think media has lost its moral authority as truth seekers just because there were some bad apples?

For a coach who had talked so much to media during his honeymoon period, does he tell his players not to give time and space when our goal is attacked. What Maldives players do often is, when opposition strikers get ready to shoot, show them their back two three yards away when instead they should be closing down them, and stop giving them time and space to shoot. Most of the goals we have conceded are ‘soft’ goals which with good defensive organisation could have been prevented.
