Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national team has departed to Bangladesh this evening to compete in the ongoing Bangabandhu Gold Cup. Maldives team left today contains 21 players.

Ashad Ali, Ali Fasir, Ahmed Abdulla and Mohamed Imran are the only four senior players in the squad.

Captain Ali Ashfaq, Imran Mohamed, Amdhan Ali, Asadhulla Abdulla, Samdhooh and Mohamed Arif decided not to travel with the team due to various reasons. Meanwhile assistant coach Assad Abdul Ghani and goal keeper coach Aslamd Abdul Raheem has resigned from the post saying that they don’t see any importance of being with the team now.

Maldives national team coach, Ricki Herbert refused to speak to the media today.

“I’m not planning to talk media today. You guys don't ask me what you’re writing. I see many of you quite disrespectful. So I don't feel I should talk to media at the moment.” Ricki Herbert, who guided New Zealand in the 2010 FIFA World Cup said to the local media just before the departure.

Maldives will play their first game against Cambodia on Monday and the second game is against Bangladesh U23 on Wednesday. Their final group game is against Bahrain on Friday.

Extremely disturbing to hear that coach find fault with the media. What does he wants media to write about his team and him. Being in a public platform, as a public figure by virtue of a coach, you are under scrutiny every time the team you coach play. When you win you will be applauded and when you lose criticism will come in your way. Sometimes you will be harshly criticised, you cannot help it. If you are overly piqued about it, it is your problem.

It is natural that coach will face criticism when teams dont perform to their level. But that reply from coach makes me question his capability.

The last time maldives and cambodia played were in AFC challenge cup qualification in 2011. Maldives won with a flattering score of 4-0. 2kilo and dhangandey were on the score sheet. Dhagandey in fact scored a sublime hattrick. Galolhu stadium was rocking at its foundation.
