New Radiant and Victory will play in the first match of Ooredoo Dhivehi Premier League

Male’, MALDIVES – New Radiant’s caretaker coach Hassan Hameed (Dakey) has said that they want a winning start when facing Victory Sports Club in the first match of the newly introduced Ooredoo Dhivehi Premier League.

“We are very well prepared and played lots of competitive games in AFC Cup and People’s Cup. So we want a winning start tomorrow night.”

“This is a new tournament and new game for us. We can’t change past and we don’t want to talk about those matches now. Our main target is to win this game.”

Dakey also highlighted that their key player Ali Fasir will play in tomorrow’s game.

“Fasir is fully fit for the game and surely he will play during some part of the game against Victory.”

On the other hand, Victory’s head coach Ahmed Nashid (Naadhu) said that it will be a tough game for them.

“New Radiant has played lots of competitive games in this year and they have very good players compared to Victory.”

“Our squad is very weak compared to last season but we will be fighting to win the game and I will say it will be a clash between Henveiru and Galolhu. We want to win this game.”

Victory was in the fourth position last season and the clubs main target for the league is to defend that position.

“Our target is to be in the top four and even better than that. We have two new foreign players and I hope that they will perform well against New Radaint.”

New Radiant will play against Victory tomorrow night at 2100 hours at National Football Stadium and the entrace to the stadium is free.

I don’t think this game will attract more than 2000 people in a 10,000 capacity stadium. On the current climate they (FAM, clubs) would need to do a lot more to draw a good audience but nothing of noteworthy was done to excite football watching public. Except for New Radiant and Maziya the remaining teams are of the same standard they were last season. Though MVR 2 million was supposedly allowed for each team, those clubs did not strengthen their squad as they should. Also somewhere FAM got lost in their mission, for some reason they just could not keep up with the initial whirlwind buzz about this new league, the euphoria has strangely disappeared. Now it has the making of yet another disastrous football season – an unfulfilled dream in term of bringing in a sizable crowd to watch league.

I think the planned Atoll home-away league would attract more fans. And if that happens, in a few year's time, the national tournament would liven up a bit more.
