Male', MALDIVES - New Radiant has appointed Bulgarian UEFA pro license coach Velizar Emilov Popov for the upcoming year. Speaking at a press briefing, New Radiant chairperson, Ali Waheed (Balak) said that they have selected the coach based on interviews they have had with the shortlisted coaches.

“We shortlisted three coaches. Boykov, Velizar and a Finland coach. We also spoke to former national team coach Gomez. But he said that he has unfinished work he wanted to do with the national team. His focus was on national team and we respect that”

“After interviews with the shortlisted coaches, we decided on Velizar. He has experience in the top level and has worked with international players. So I feel he would have a lot to give to the local players”

Velizar, born in 1976 played professionally with Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Herbar Pazardzhik and Spartak Plovdiv. He started his coaching career with Spartak Plovdiv as the assistant coach. He worked in Cherno Move from 2010 and is working with Costuleni at the moment.

“I feel it’s not a problem to select a young coach. We all are young in the management. I don’t think it’s a problem to select a young coach to lead the team. He has worked with international players such as Brazilian Mario Jardel when he played for Cherno Move"

Mari Jardel played for clubs such as Galatasary, Porto and Sporting Lisbon.

Velizar is expected to arrive in the Maldives on 9th January 2012 and the practice is scheduled to start on 10th January 2012.

New Radiant was in search of a coach after former New Radiant coach Mohammed Shiyaz (Mohan) resigned from his post. Under the leadership of Mohan New Radiant won the league without a single defeat and the President's cup last year.

New Radiant has also appointed Iqbal and Nizam (Thoddoo Nizam) as the assistant coach.

Balak also thanked the supporters who worked with the management in the last year.

"I would like to thank everyone who worked with us in the last year including the sponsors, the supporters and all the other people contributed to us"

As a supporter of Maldivian football, i congratulate new radiant for this move. No disrespect to our local coaches, but I feel we need quality foreign coaches in our first division teams. I know it could be expensive, but to build a new generation of great footballers we need good physical and tactical training and of all, we need a person to drill some professional discipline into our young footballing generation. But having said this, we all know that our footballers are mainly semi pro and they have another full time job to attend. Which is why I hope foreign coaches can use their connections with their foreign counterparts to try and get some of our players to show case their talents professionally. As I have said earlier we must now try to export some of our players to the foreign leagues. Once, we start seeing the benefit of becoming a pro player more will try harder to follow in the footsteps and we will have a motivated, target oriented bunch of players. So many lives have been changed for the good in the south Americas and Africa purely due to good footballing. It's time for us to follow suit. Wishing all the best to Maldivian football and congra to new radiant on their move. May you and maziya fly our national flag high and proudly in the afc cup and wish both teams all the success.
