Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national team coach Ricki Herbert has said that he has no intention to resign from the post when the supporters called for his resignation after the 2-0 defeat to Yemen in AFC Asian Cup Qualifying playoff match.

“It happens everywhere in the world and that’s the life of coaches. I have no intention to resign from the post and the board will decide on that.”

“I’ll take the responsibility of the results and I can say that the players cannot play international football at this level. They are not fit enough to play at this level.” Said Ricki Herbert, who guided New Zealand in 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“It's a disappointing result for us and it's a qualifier,” said Herbert. “The players tried their best to give something and I think still we need to work hard.”

Under the helm of Ricki Herbert Maldives failed to get a good result in the past couple of months other than the two matches against Bhutan in the FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

I disagree that our players can't compete at this level. Our results against Qatar and Iran at home show that we can play much better. The players need more inspiraion, more motivation so that theyw ork harder. During a match, apart from the players, the main people who can do this are the coach and the fans. Unfortunately, the payers, the coach and the fans failed to do their part tonight. There are also calls to reduce match ticket prices and I think that's a good call.

why weren't there preparations for the match coach. Aren't you being paid to manage the national team. Were you too busy commuting to India to be on TV as pundit. This was an important match for our football and there was no preparations. Only Ashfaq saved us of humiliations being defeated by Bhutan last match.

We supporters don't mind our team loosing after a good fight and working hard for a win. But last night was another low hit by our team. Except for keeper imran no one else seemed to bother. No team work, no Spirit, no game plan and we saw a bunch of players jogging around and making simple and silly mistakes. If one word could define the performance it will be "dismal". Drastic changes need to be brought. If this team do not want to perform for the nation we don't want any of them. Don't know why it should only be the coach who should retire. Change the whole team and at least select a team that will give their all for the team and nation. And the talk about developing youngsters for next generation and giving exposure to young players seems to be just a talk. Except for hamza we saw the same old team. Imran Nashid is not a young player. He is new to the team but is 27. For the return leg, Please select a team who will fight for the nation. Wishing and praying for a quick and positive change in our football.

Mr Ricki, under the helm of a coach called Velizar Popov, a couple of months back, the same Maldivian national team managed to hold Qatar 0-0 in this ground. They have score the only goal after 100th minute. So which players cannot play international football at what level?? Do you mean Yemen is stronger than Qatar?

If you think maldives is not good enough to play at this level, we are compelled to ask the same: are you good enough to be hired for the salary you get?

You might not have any intention to resign, that’s alright but we have reasons to believe that you are not up for this particular job despite your pedigree elsewhere. You see, you were able to win only against Bhutan in a dozen or matches, that also after a mighty scare, Ashfaq spared your blushes. You cannot inspire confidence in your scribes, even when the team is doing over the same thing again and again and everybody else in the stadium believe your tactic is not working and are wondering for a bit of inspiration from somewhere even if in the form of a substitution, you are motionless in the dugout with minutes left on the clock may be not knowing what to do with your tactics. Also your insipid tactics limit your players rather than free them in their roles. You haven’t rectified a creaky defence despite ample time to do so. Before this stadium was fortress for the boys as a certain South Korea found to their bitter liking. Most of all, you still cannot find a formation to get the best out of the available players. So why do you want stick around?
