Maldives national team coach Velizar Popo

Saint Denis, REUNION – Maldives national team coach Velizar Popov has responded to the media critics to him saying that he will take the responsibilities if losing the games.

Speaking to the Maldives media team in Reunion just after the match against Seychelles yesterday Popov said he never gave excuses when they lose a game.

“I never give excuses and when the team lose it is because of me and when the team wins all the credit goes to the players. So today all the credit goes to the players.”

“This team is completely a new team and we are without six key players and during the past few matches with Seychelles we lost all the games but to we got the chance to win the game with 10 goals.” Popov added.

“The players played a fantastic game today and I can say that during the past few years I spent in the Maldives this is the best football match that my team played. They played exactly what I want from them and the all the credit goes to the players.”

Popov also said that now he has two options to work with the Maldives national team and shared his view about the players who was dropped from the team.

“About the players who are dropped from the team and talking too much, there is only two option and one is that I will clean totally this team and will built something new or after one week we go back to Male, I will terminate my contract and go back to home and that’s it.”

“When they play bad I will criticize them and after the first I did that and they reacted to that fantastic. This is the football which I wanted to see.”

Bulgarian born tactician said that the future of Maldives is bright with the young new players and they need to play more games.

“The future of Maldives is very bright with the young players. Naaiz, Andy, Hampu, Imaz and Irey are fantastic players and I can’t put nine or ten players on the field at a same time.”

Maldives will play their last group game against Madagascar tomorrow evening.

I salute the coach for the way he broached up an issue so critical to the development of our football which has long been buried by successive administrations as a non-issue. Our this ‘devil-may-care attitude’ has to stop, which has cost so many tournaments with near – misses because we go to a tournament for just sake of it and take it our own leisure. Time to inject some dose of professionalism and seriousness to our national sport, enough with the selfie pics and, the extent to which some seniors go to impress girls.

What critics? Are there any critic? He is attempting to do such a noble work, such, such noble work trying to overhaul a long established culture of complacency and lax attitude that is ingrained in the psyche of a player living the double life of the so-called professional footballer. On one hand they are earning the perks of stardom but on the other hand doing everything the very opposite of true professional footballers: Aggressive smoking, staying awake into the wee hour of morning and engrossed too much in the narcissistic life of his own – things that are the opposite of true player, professional or otherwise.

He touched on a such delicate topic many coaches would avoid for fear of jeopardising their position as a coach, let alone the harmony of the team. Keep it up coach, it is a blessing that we have you, and it is good to see where locals are not willing to trod a forigener is ready to jump in for the betterment of football.

Who is criticizing Popov? Is it the media? Because if it is, I would not pay too much attention to them. You just need to listen to a sports report on our local channels to realize that our so-called sports "journalists" and "experts" are utterly ignorant in their field. Most of them don't even know how many teams there are in the Dhivehi Premier League. In hindsight, what Popov did was great. We see even world reknowned managers doing this. When a player has an attitude problem, a public dressing down often works as a motivational tool. In the case of our national team, it worked wonders.

If we want to succeed we need to instill proper discipline into our players both on and off the field. Our players should have strong determination and be ready to sacrifice part of their current life style to excel. As the saying goes "no pain no gain" we must take a minute to ponder upon the journey our top athlete Saaid took to be what he is today. I have been following him ever since he won bronze in saf games and he was not the fastest when he was awarded the scholarship to train in Jamaica. He was amongst two athletes and the second athlete who was better than saaid at that time actually did not want to go through (or sacrifice) many things and returned back. (Rewind a decade and it was actually a footballer known by the nickname "dhagandey" who was the first to get a great opportunity to trial in Benfica, but that's past and it didn't happen ..how I wish he went). As the coach said our young generation needs to take any opportunity that comes their way show their talent and commitment and I hope and pray that they can qualify us into the next Asian cup. We have full trust in the younger generation. Just do as the coach says.
