Not surprising Akram is not in the squad. Ricki predecessors did not have the luxury of many options, hence persisted with him despite his limitation as reliable defender. His problems are his first touch is not good enough which can be costly in defensive duties. He is nervy in pressure situation, make hasty half-hearted clearances. He also has the knack of making rash challenges in the box. Coach has done the right thing. It is time others are tried. If Akram can correct that part of his game he came be very good defender.

I always thought he did better when utilized in midfield. He just doesn't have the natural instincts of a defender, but is one of the best players in the squad with the ball at his feet. I always wondered what he could offer to the team if he was played as a playmaker. The problem with him is that he has gained a lot of weight and has looked generally unfit for the last few years. He just doesn't seem to be able to complete 90 minutes in international matches.
