Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has said that Mohamed Shaweed is the only candidate who has submitted the application for the upcoming FAM Election.

General Secretary Bassam Adeel Jaleel said to maldivesoccer.com tonight that as per the statues they will ask for a yes or no vote in the election as there is only one candidate for the post.

“We will ask for a yes/no vote in the election and that's what in the new statutes of FAM as well. Even in the last AFC election there is only one candidate for the Vice President post and the same procedure was done.”

As per the new statutes the candidates must have the support of three clubs from the first division and Shaweed got the support of seven clubs from the first division including Club Valencia, who were against him during the last few months.

With the new statutes 44 member clubs from different zones, first division, second division and third division can vote to elect the new president of Football Association of Maldives.

FAM has formed an electoral committee to take the responsibilities of the election and the members in the electoral committee are Administrator, Judicial Administration, Hassan Saeedh Hussain (Chairman), and State Minister at Ministry of Housing, Mohamed Faiz and Superintendent of police Mohamed Dhawood.

The election is scheduled to be held on 22nd October this year.

He deserves a shot at presidency and getting him elected uncontested all the more better. He has done a lot more in six months than his predecessor could do in his entire ill fated tenure, which of cause was rightly cut short. • Money issue is temporary sorted out, he gives 1 million rufiyya to each club in top division. • He has rebranded the league, to increase ward based rivalry, clubs are registered to the district they belong, though nothing close the expectation has come in the way of support from their respective fans till date. • He personally involved himself to get hold of world class coach, a coach who has taken teams to world cup. So let him have these five years and see what more he can do to help our football.

I think the points are well-made and Maldivesfootball has made some progress internally and systems are taking shape, no doubt. However, we have to accept that silly decisions have been made too: the fiasco about the national ground and the effect on the league and the WC qualifier.

Shaweed has made very good decisions under his leadership on the Normalization Committee. I would say he was doing a very good job, until the politicians decided to get involved and he too showed his political colours. My advice to him is to make football in Maldives a politics-free zone. Never mind your political affiliations, because as fans we can't care less. Just do what you're supposed to do and forget pandering to the political elite, because otherwise football in this country is never going to improve.
