Kulhudhuffushi, MALDIVES – TC Sports Club confirmed a place in the semi final of the ongoing Presidents Cup despite losing their final group game to BG Sports by 1-0. BG could have joined defending champions New Radiant to the semi final had they beat TC with a 2 goal margin.

BG’s Nigerian forward Daniel scored the only goal in the fourth minute from a good strike when Mohamed Imran failed to control the ball.

Three minutes later keeper Ifrah blocked a good shot from Yameen Ibrahim and keeps them alive.

David missed a golden opportunity to double the lead for BG Sports from a descent pass from Ahmed Usham but his shot inside the box went over the bar.

In the 89th minute referee gave marching orders to Ibrahim Migdhad for a foul on David.

TC coach Mohamed Nizam said that their performance was not good in this match.

“Our performance was not good and after the match against New Radiant the players were tired and we have seen that today. I am happy for getting a chance to play in the semi final.”

Are we the only country in the world where we use acronym as football club names? I mean what they ( BG, TC) even stand for? Why would someone want use such an abstract name in the first place? Don’t the name has to be identifiable with the fans or locality for wider recognition? This same disease has not escaped our big clubs either, though in different form. We have a club named just a random name plucked from english language, another a city of Spain, a third one a name of totally foreign bird not existing in our part of the world. What do these names even mean to the clubs? Why is there so much disconnect with general rule which is so much intertwined with the land you belong to and should evokes the culture, historical past, ethnicity?

It's a bit odd, yes but I guess it's an ingrained part of our culture. We only need to look at the names of our addresses to see completely random names! If the likes of BG or TC qualify for the AFC Cup, they will be forced to write their club names in full form. I was watching an AFC football show a few years back when Victory under Suzain were playing in the AFC Cup. Victory had gone on to lose all their games and finished the tournament with no points in the bag. They guys hosting the show thought it was hilarious and recommended that Victory SC's name be changed, to something like Defeat SC. This is what happens when too many clubs are concentrated in one small area; you tend to get daft names.

I was an avid fan of Valencia (before) and yes the afc commentators made fun of the name....valencia one of the biggest clubs in spain playing in AFC cup...hahaha. well I liked the names valencia, new radiant , victory, hura.....they were the old generation clubs which we loved supporting...things are have changed now.....no real connection with clubs...the players think they are the best in the region....too foni....while they cant even beat teams like bhutan...
