When one team is financially stronger than the others and signing key players, there is a common criticism in Maldives that the football is no longer a competitive game in the country. It is a true statement for people who really don’t understand the game and has no experience in the field of management. And when one says the supporters of this specific ‘stronger’ team are not happy, he must really be a depressed person wandering on coffee tables looking for something creative but comes up with smelly garbage.
If you are a supporter of Manchester United, would you be glad to wait until the very last kick of the season to know whether your team wins the premier league? Would you be so bored and sleep whenever your team plays in the league? Or would you just give up on football for life saying the league is not competitive? I don’t think so, supporters will jump with joy whenever their team wins and they will always want their team to win the league as soon as possible.
When we look at Maldivian football, there was nothing to celebrate when a team with no fan base wins. But a team with huge fan base like New Radiant wins a match or the league there will be joy. Because whenever they play, the loyal supporters follow the team and just like they are miles ahead of others in terms of results they are miles ahead of the rest in terms of supporters as well.
Their supporters have reasons to celebrate just like the players and the coaching staff. We have seen teams play in the AFC Cup in the last few seasons but unfortunately we see an almost empty stadium. The image is totally different when New Radiant plays, the stadium gets crowded and noisy not only because they have reached the second round or quarterfinals but also they have a huge fan base. Even when they were fighting for their survival in the league, they earn more than the league leaders from match tickets. They have something to celebrate even at that stage and why can’t they have something to celebrate when they are ruling the local football.
It is not competitive, yes, when one team is way much stronger but who is there to blame? Do New Radiant assemble their team to match the rest to please the opponent supporters? Do Barcelona have to release Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas to make sure other teams have a chance to beat them? Only someone with no sense will agree on that. Why can’t other teams climb up the ladder to face the giants. Aren’t we always talk about climbing and reaching greater heights, isn’t that the target of our life. Will it be an accomplishment if we all go down the level to match the weakest team?
This is not about New Radiant, this is about Maldivian football. If we are to beat the best we have to be the best. New Radiant team is getting stronger during the transfer period, but anyone with a brain can see they are not signing Akram, Messi and Ghana player to beat BG Sports or Maziya. They are aiming higher than Galolhu stadium. But some may find it difficult to digest that and they will be pleased to see New Radiant release Dhagey, Umair, Sentey and Imran so others can have a chance of competing but the majority of Maldivian football fans will not enjoy that, because they are loyal fans of the Blues and whenever New Radiant lifts a title majority of football fans will celebrate.
Only fools will lose to please others.
