Muscat, OMAN – Maldives under 23 team coach Assad Abdul Ghani has said that their main target is not to concede an early goal against Lebanon in the 2016 AFC U23 Championship Qualifying on Monday.

“Our main target would be not to concede an early goal and we will start the game very defensively but based on how the game changes we will change the tactics if we have to do so.”

Assad also said that based on the match schedule it would be a tough tournament for them.

“I would say it’s a very tight tournament for us we have to play games within a short period of time. We will have just one day to rest before the second game.”

Assad also highlighted that they have few experienced players and their role is important during the match.

“We have few players like Irey, Hampu and Bambuch who have some international experience and I would say it would be very good for the new players for having those players with them. And I hope that they will use their experience on the field.”

Maldives will kick off their first game in the Qualifying today at 2130 hours (Maldives time) against Lebanon.

To take our football from current level to a better level we have to do many things simultaneously. - major improvement on grassroots level training. - look after the wellbeing of players coming through age group, harness their talent properly and to good effect. - keep junior and senior national team on a regular diet of international exposure through friendlies on fifa sanctioned dates and taking part in international tournaments. - make our domestic league competitive( if with two good teams and the remaining 6 teams are there just to make up for the numbers our football will never improve) - do proper marketing and related activities to bring back supporters to stadium ( they are the heartbeat of players) - do something about how we play football. Male is not the only place where football players are. There are another 25 atolls wanting to be part of it. * what happen so often with our football is...when an international tournament is round the corner ... yes few days to start we start to prepare. By then the coach is only the way either from his vacation or a new coach is appointed , he get couple of weeks to learn players and drill a good team. where in the world any coach do miracles? Where in the world a country try to develop their national sport the way we do year after year going the samething? Only fools will do the same thing repeatedly expecting different results?
