Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has said that the Maldives will compete in the upcoming Bangbandhu Gold Cup to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in January.

General Secretary Bassam Adeel Jaleel said that national team coach will decide the competing team and there might be a chance of sending a mixed team.

“We haven’t finalize a team to compete in this tournament but the coach will decide on that. We all know that the SAFF Games is scheduled for next February and we will use this tournament as a preparation for the SAFF Games.”

Other than Maldives competing teams are Malaysia, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Nepal and two teams from Bangladesh including their U23 team.

Bangbandhu Gold Cup is scheduled to be played from 8-19 January 2016 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Is FAM on a mission to beat the living daylights out of these players by making them play a tournament in two consecutive months?

This is where a little bit of intelligence is required on FAM's part. There will be plenty of players in need of a long rest after a grueling month of DPL and a SAFF Championship, but at the same time, this is an opportunity for those playing in the SAFF Games to get some game time. Personally I think it would have been best if we didn't participate in this tournament. Although it's nice to get this chance, the timing is just wrong. Also, it would most definitely mean that the start of the DPL season will be postponed and clubs playing in AFC Cup will suffer again.
