Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has today passed the new statues of the association with a major change to give voting rights to 21 members instead of 44 members.

In the previous statutes it says 44 members clubs from different zones, first division, second division and third division can vote to elect the president of Football Association of Maldives.

New Radiant submitted the amendment to change the voting clubs from 44 to 21 and the clubs from the first division will get two votes each.

Normalization committee chairman Mohamed Shaweed said it was a black day for the Maldives football.

“FIFA wanted to give the voting rights to all the member clubs throughout the Maldives but not only the clubs in the capital city.”

The other important change in the statutes is that the FA will have a president along with a vice president and seven executive committee members and the executive committee members can submit their names independently. In the previous statutes it says the presidential candidate can submit a list of members who are behind him to run for the election. And also the members must have the backing of minimum five member clubs.

Reduced to 21 members from 44? Thats the last thing any genuine maldives football lover wants when everything related to it is so much concentrated to capital city of the country. That’s the last vestige of any form of power wielded by the the far flung islands of Maldives to lend any form of democratic semblance to the voting process. Something murky going on at the level of drawing board?

This doesn't make sense; especially in an era, when the promises have been to develop football around the country by bringing together the skills of the youths from all islands. So, is the best way to start doing this is to blow the opportunity to engage with the talents from the atolls by denying them the vote? On a different topic, I wondered why MS didn't cover or report on Maziya's first AFC cup match of the season - a bit surprised. I'll put it down to a lack of resources.

This is a ridiculous change in the FAM statutes. Island football is the football which has produced the best players in Maldives. Players belonging to those islands represent the National team. They need a voice, they need to speak and they need to have a say in the decisions of FAM. This change is obviously brought to manipulate the voting, bribing delegates and above all a single person wanting to control the decisions of FAM. This should be changed and this should not be allowed by Registrar. I call upon the Registrar not to approve this statutes and to be sent to review it and give authority and power to all.
