Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives have been moved from Western Countries to the Eastern side for AFC Cup groupings after extensive discussions in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee meeting. After poor performance in the AFC Cup, Maldives was moved from East Asian side to West Asian countries last year. Maldives also got only one automatic qualification and a play-off match.

In one of the tweets this afternoon Azim said “More good news; AFC Cup slot for Maldives has been changed from West to East in today’s Executive Committee”

Speaking to maldivesoccer.com Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president who is taking part in the executive committee said that the change happened after extensive discussions in AFC.

“Our direct qualification slots were reduced from two to one. This happened because of the poor results in the last few AFC Cups by our teams”

Maldives was among the four associations with the lowest points according to the AFC evaluation system. This meant one team would get an automatic qualification spot while the second team had to play a play-off match.

Victory lost to Al-Tilal in the AFC Cup qualifying play off by 3-4 while VB finished the group stages at the bottom of the table with just one point this year.

VB's "extraordinary squad" finished 4th in the Dhivehi League last season. I don't think they could have made any difference even if they were placed in the East or West.

Is this only for the AFC Cup group matches, or does it also include youth national team qualifiers?
