Speaking to maldivesoccer.com Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president who is taking part in the executive committee said that the change happened after extensive discussions in AFC.
“Our direct qualification slots were reduced from two to one. This happened because of the poor results in the last few AFC Cups by our teams”
Maldives was among the four associations with the lowest points according to the AFC evaluation system. This meant one team would get an automatic qualification spot while the second team had to play a play-off match.
