Male’, MALDIVES – President of Maldives Olympic Committee and former chairman of Normalization Committee of Football Association of Maldives, Mohamed Shaweed has decided to compete in the upcoming election of FAM for the second time.

Shaweed announced his decision in a joint press conference with Olympic Council of Asia’s Director General Captain Hussain Al-Musallam, World Anti-Doping Agency’s Deputy Director General Mr. Rob Koehler and Asia/Ocenia Regional Director Mr. Kazuhiro Hayashi at the Maldives Olympic Committee.

“I have decided to compete in the upcoming FAM election. I have discussed about the decision made the Sports Council with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and it is totally against the Olympic Charter. And there is no barrier for the President of Olympic Committee to compete in an election of Football Association.”

“Recently IOC gave the chance to the Sports Ministry and the government of Maldives to visit IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland to discuss regarding the matter but nothing happened.” Shaweed added.

Shaweed also said that IOC has informed them not to respect the decision made by the Sports Council.

Shaweed has resigned from the post of Chairman of the Normalization Committee appointed by FIFA on 21st March.

FAM has recently decided to host another extra ordinary congress on 7th May to pass the statutes as required by the world football’s governing body, FIFA.

Consider this as just a routine eventuality. My point is, the footballing community is paying too much attention to the politics of who. It's time to focus on real action on the ground. If the fans and clubs really want to make a transition, they can. And they can do so by putting effort and deciding on what the next targets are and working on them.

With the support of the clubs a status quo was passed, but suddenly that status quo became a problem for the same clubs????!!! Why ??? The only thing changed in those clubs was that they recently held their elections and a politician (MPs) were elected to their clubs. :::
