Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives national team coach Drago Mamic has selected his final 23 players for the upcoming AFC Challenge Cup. Ahmed Rasheed (Ammadey), Ahmed Imaz (Aako) and Hamzath Mohamed (Hampu) were the three players omitted from the squad.

In a press conference held at FAM House to announce the final 23 players for the AFC Challenge Cup, Maldives coach Drago said that he has to final the squad and based on the training sessions and the matches he has selected the best players.

“Ahmed Rasheed worked very hard to be in the squad and he has improved a lot during the training but now he was injured and he is not ready to play in the AFC Challenge Cup.”

When asked about the inclusion of Fazeel, who was not included in the initial squad Drago said that I have selected the players based on my dilemma.

“I was choosing the players for my dilemma and my conception. And if a player is not in the squad it does not mean that they are not quality players. But I chose them based on the positions and all.”

The worst of thing about current national team is they have only one recognised defensive midfielder in Bakaa. There is no like-for-like cover for him if he is injured, in 2011 saff championship Maldives biggest failure was bakaa’s injury and that he had to be side-lined for the rest of the tournament. He may be short on match fitness when he joins the team having been away for his dad’s treatment. It is such a shame you have only one natural defensive midfielder who is so good in air, confident tackler and a tireless runner taking pressure off his defence. Hope he can recapture his fitness and form in time for the games.

Where is that young fellow Zaad? He came on for one of the friendlies against Pakistan last year and looked pretty impressive. I once commented that he is a ready-made replacement should Bakaa get injured. Seems to have disappeared of the radar now...

Fan, and others a suggestion from myself as another big fan of our beloved nation and football team. Lets not reveal our critical weaknesses this close to the tournament. There are opponents visiting this page and doing their homework. If we need to do so, we should really discuss it in Dhivehi and process it in latin/thaana!
