Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president Ali Azim stated that it’s another bad day for the Maldivian football after the FAM elections was postponed for the second time. The elections was first postponed on 18th July after the elections was brought to a disrupt over United Victory’s vote. Today, the 3rd division preliminary voting to select the two candidates who would represent the third division was brought to a halt by Ahmed Niyaz, Ali Shameem and Madhih Ismail. They claimed that FIFA and AFC officials met with suspended VB Addu FC board member and FAM executive committee without the knowledge of the elections committee and decided to cancel the voting rights of United Victory. FAM elections now will be held based on the decision of FIFA.
FAM executive committee made the decision after trying to hold the elections for more than 3 hours.
“It is a sad day for the Maldives football. We have witnessed another bad day and these kind of incidents destroy the image of football and it will lose the trust of the public towards the football family”
Azim also noted that the stakeholders met with FAM executive committee members and the FIFA and AFC observers to conduct today’s elections smoothly.
“Members of the football family and FAM executive committee with FIFA and AFC observers met last night to conduct the elections smoothly. It is unfortunate that the elections was not held today”
Azim also noted that the members who disrupted the elections would be forwarded to the disciplinary committee.
“The members who disrupted the elections will be forwarded to the disciplinary committee. But we have to note that the disciplinary actions that was taken in the first time, were mainly towards the members who entered the elections hall without permission and we hope that there will be the same consistency this time”
A new date for the elections will be announced after a decision by FIFA.
