Male’, MALDIVES – Drago Mamic, Maldives national teams head coach, has said after the goalless draw that it was the best scenario for qualifying for the semifinal of AFC Challenge Cup.

Speaking at the post match press conference Drago also said that the win was a good birthday gift for him and he thanked all the players and fans.

“It’s the best scenario and first of all I want to appreciate the work of my players and I have never received such a big gift for my birthday. It’s not today but two days later and I am very happy for this and I want to thank all the players and all the fans.”

“To be honest I was always thinking about the best scenario to happen and when we know that the game against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan is finished we started to celebrate.”

Drago also said that he was happy to achieve such a historic success in the history of Maldivian football.

“This is the first time that Maldives qualify for the semifinal of AFC Challenge Cup and nobody can repeat this success as this is the last edition of this tournament.” Drago said with a smile.

“Today we played one final and again we will play another final and I hope that we can play in the final and win the tournament.”

When asked about the opponent team in the semifinal he said that all the teams are strong teams and they must prepare well for the semi.

“All the teams are strong and there is no easy team in group B. We have to prepare for the semifinal as we prepared for the last three games and we started the tournament with a bad result and this is football. We can’t win every game.”

Maldives advanced to the semifinal as the runner-up from the group A

I believe we have given enough time for Umair to correct his mistakes!!! Three games, and he still plays the same!!! I think for the next game we have to drop him and either (1) bring Asadhullah as a CS and play Ashfag as a SS (which is his favorite position), or (2) bring Bonda, but yes, bonda too his not playing that well either. But the fact is midfield area HAS TO IMPROVE. ::: And one more concern, last night the team was attacking ONLY from ONE SIDE. Thats very very bad

Why on earth these critics doesnt understand we have thin sqaud to select our 23 for national team let alone few experienced at this level, why cannot you guys appreciate the fact we made few mistakes compare to first two games , and either way its not only fans who want to win here coach would try his best, umair is experienced in this level than other players on bench despite three bad matches in row but anyone can wonder wether we should take a risk of introducing totally inexperienced player and make a one blunder by him at crucial point in a match in circumstances where we could not ractify it, you guys would be first to jump at coach if that is to happen, plx try to appreciate

Thanks for bringing in some common sense to this debate about the first 11. Umar has had bad matches, we agree but if we look at the record, he has scored quite a lot for the nation in recent years. He is a threat to goals from free kicks and it's good to have that option. The reality is like common' said Umair's experience is needed but if he doesn't play well, he should be substitited during the match, but the coach is entitled to select him for the first 11, based on his proven ability to score goals. Another thing is that there is a problem with the positioning of the payers, including Dhagey and Umair. Letting them play in their natural striking position can change a lot for the better. That's just my amateur view, and easily not the best view, I concede.

It's not rocket science for anyone to say that Umair is not performing. Umair is an outstanding player and he has done so much for our national team and we appreciate it. But so far in this tournament, we witnessed a totally different Umair this time. No offense Umair, but he is way too slow and out of every 10 passes 9 are miss passes. And, isn't Asadhullah and Bonda experienced enough? And in a crucial game like a Semi Final of a tournament, where we witnessed a consistent poor performance from him, should we take a risk and allow him to play? I believe that a player who perform well is more important and valuable than a player who don't, no matter how experience he is.

common; First the coach SAID all his squad deserves first 11 positions. So either coach or you are telling a lie (by saying squad is thin).:: Ok, Umair is improving, but THAT IS NOT ENOUGH. If you want to see improvements then watch the performance of Amdhaan THATS WHAT WE CALL IMPROVEMENT. Its is always good to replace underperforming players and give chance for the bench team. Look at Man City. Dzjeko was down and Negrado was on fire at the start but at the end of the season this was opposit.
