Oppo and Adubarey, both of them were not in the squad for the upcoming SAFF Championship

Male’, MALDIVES – BG Sports midfielder Ibrahim Fazeel (Oppo) has been ruled out of National Team Squad for the upcoming SAFF Championship to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 31st August to 11th September this year.

Speaking to maldivesoccer.com national team coach Istvan Urbanyi said tonight that Oppo is having some injury problems and due to that his performance was not good in the league.

“Oppo is a good player but he is having some injuries and still he needs time to recover. He didn’t perform well in the last matches of the league as well.”

He also said he has included the veteran play maker Ali Umar based on the performance in the league and AFC Cup.

“I have included Ali Umar based on his performance in the league and also in AFC Cup. He has performed very well not even this year but also in last year. He deserved a place in the squad this time.”

“I need some young skillful players and also some experience players.”

Urbanyi also said that he will trim the squad to 20 players after the training camp in Thailand.

“We will trim the squad to 20 players after the training camp in Thailand. I will include three goal keepers in the final squad.”

He also said that Ahmed Niyaz (niya) was included in the squad based on his performance this year.

“Oppo is not with us so Niyaz is a good option for the midfield with Bakaa and Kudattey. Niya has showed that in this season.

Maldives will player their first game against Sri Lanka on 2nd September.

Dis you watched AFC matches ... Those were much better matches than saff ... Ayya was among the best three players of NEWradiant .. And yes about the future there are a lot and we are going to win a cup and we need experience .. We are not going to a development session

Yes, this is the age for a player like Ali Umar to retire. But unlike others, he might be wanting to retire with a trophy!!! Maybe if we wins this SAFF C'ship he will retire!!! Anyway one thing is for sure, his performance deserves a call-up for the NT. My only worry is the fear of overusing him, even a little muscle injury will have devastating effects on his career, and he has AFC Cup also!!!

based on the performance, yes Ali Umar and Niya deserves a spot and rightfully Oppo and Adey has to be dropped. And Ahmed Imaz deserves a spot too. :::: BUT when we use ali umar we have to be extra careful not to overuse him, and we should understand that he can not deliver like when he was young for 90 Mins. We supporters also should expect Ali Umar to be replaced after 60-70minutes of a game, though he might be performing fairly well. Its all about "managing" an old player.

There is no issue with the overall selection of the team as players should be selected based on performance in the ongoing season. Two or 3 names stand out as to why these players have been selected and this needs clarification from FA Maldives rather the Director of National Teams has to answer this. Firstly why was Yambe from New Radiant selected when he has not started and completed a single match in the season. Secondly why has Hockay been selected when he has also missed most of the matches for Valencia. Thirdly why is that preference has not been given to players who has performed consistently for their respective clubs. I believe Valencia left back Mujay even though he is young should be in the squad for him to gain experience rather than including Yambe or Hockay. This should be the ideal time to freshen up the squad, even though Ali Umar and Niya has played well they should be left out of the squad so that FA could work towards development of the national squad with the future in mind. -

Selecting Ayya was the best choice made. He has been playing well for past two seasons, but never got a spot in National team. Old or young, he deserves a spot. National team should comprise of best players, not just youth as youth development programmes. But if there are young players who play as good as oldies, young ones should be preferred. As Oppo was ruled out, we knew that the best players were selected.
