Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA – Maldives national team captain Ali Ashfaq (Dhagandey) has said that the preparation for the upcoming AFC Challenge cup is very important to get success in the tournament.

Speaking exclusively to maldivesoccer.com Ashfaq said that the Maldives team has the quality to get success in the tournament but we need to prepare for this tournament very seriously.

“We can beat the teams and get success in the tournament but to do that we have to prepare very well and we have to use the time that we have for the preparation.”

He also said that still Maldives has time to appoint a coach and start the preparation.

“Other teams who are participating in this tournament has already started the preparation but we didn’t. I hope that FAM will appoint a good coach soon and start the preparation as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, Director of National teams Ali Suzain said that they are trying their level best to appoint a coach before 15th of this month.

“We are trying our level best to finalize a coach before 15th of this month.”

“Training camp in Thailand is already finalized and the practice matches are also finalized.” Suzain added.

Suzain's "level best" is not good enough. The captain has spoken, if we don't have a coach before 15th of this month we should stage a coup against the FAM management and take over the place.

I hope we don't have to resort to a coup. The bigger point to make is that there have already been several signs to show that the curent FAM is not up to scratch to harness a national football squad at international level. Even a bigger question to ask is where is the authority or the mechanism that monitors the performance of the FAM management? Where is the governance of this association? Suzain has already made several public annoucements saying this and that will happen and every time his management and team either missed the deadline or somehome managed to humiliate the FAM (eg:- the hilarious FA Cup trophy situation, the various player and salary salary situations of the national side's and top league's clubs). It's not completely Suzain or his team's fault that no higher authority or body is monitoring their failures. It's the public service mechanism that is failing here big time. If we are really wrongly describing FAM has failed, such a body should point out to the public where the current FAM has actually achieved things so that we get a clearer picture. I hope Dhagey's advice, wishes and hopes are taken seriously because his words ARE the voice of this whole football loving nations' voice too. There are folks and youngsters dead serious about the success of our team in the upcoming unprecented tournament, where we are the hosts of much more successful countries in Asia.

As Dhagey is now playing in Malaysia and since his Team has a three week break from 18th april 2014, Dhagey should be able to join the National team for practice games and training camp (if planned for that period) without much of a problem. However, I was bit surprised about the tone and stand taken by Suzain during his Tv interview on TVM night before, during the late night sports show. I am certainly not even close to Suzain in terms of serving the nation in football and i comment on what he said with much respect towards him. But according to him there wont be much use even if FAM rush selecting a national coach as most of the national team players will be with New Radiant and Maziya and wont be released for national team practice. According to him, its still not late to select a coach. Further he added that as the league has not started yet, the coach wont see players from other local teams playing either. Howeve, I personally feel that a coach needs to witness first hand, the players playing and not be asked to stay up at night to watch couple of recorded games. Many things such as game reading and movement and other abilities of the players may not be recorded on tape. Furhter, our boys always lacked the fitness and tactical ability and i feel it is important for the coach to work in collaboration with the two teams (new and maziya) to implement his plan of improving the players on these areas. So please bring a coach and start tuning up our boys to lift the cup. Football always unites every one in this country, so dont make us all cry at our home ground. Preparing hard, working hard and loosing is different than to loose due to lack of preparation. So please Act fast. May allah grant the people involved in developing our nations football wisdom and strength and may Maldives Win this AFC challenge cup. Wishing all the best to Maldives Football.
