Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives lost their first game of the second round of joint qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup against Qatar by 1-0 tonight here in the capital city of Maldives, Male after a stoppage time goal from Ahmad Ahmed Mohamed El Sayed.

Maldives keeper Imran Mohamed made some outstanding saves to keep them alive and he made a stunning save to stop the shot from Ghanaian born Muntari in the seventy third minute.

Maldives coach Velizar Popov made double substitutes in the 60th minute with the introduction of Ahmed Nashid and Ali Fasir for Asadhulla Abdulla and Mohamed Umair respectively.

Four minutes before the normal time keeper Imran Mohamed made another superb save to stop the shot from Muayed.

Qatar’s Ahmad Ahmad Mohamed El Sayed broke the deadlock in the 9th minute of the extra time, which the Japanese referee Yudai Yamamoto gave an incredible 8 minutes as extra time.

The victory sees Qatar level on points with Hong Kong at the top of the table after the Honk Kong hammered Bhutan 7-0.

The group winners and four best runners-up (total 12 teams) will advance to the 2019 Asian Cup finals and the final round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

I am satisfied with the performance from Maldives, and am proud despite all the difficulty in our football association, we don't have a long term plan ! I feel sad for our future football.

We need positive thinking to move on to the next step. Our football have progressed in the last decade but we need to be focussed and not give up! I'm very confident that we'll get good results in this qualifying campaign.

why 8 minutes extra time is amazing? maldives was wasting time. the ball was not played because of faking for more than 12 minutes

Maldives defence and of course goalie were world class! Some of the tackes from Hockey and Shafiu were clinical and very well-timed. We deserved a point from this game and would have done so if the referee hadn't amazingly given 8 minutes added time yet another 2 minutes again! that's another record in FIFA's history.

I watched the game on Dubai Sports and the commentator was very impressed with Imran, Shafiu and Amdhaan. They were all easily the best players on the pitch. I was very happy to see that Popov had obviously been working on defensive drills and closing down of opposition, so this is a huge positive. Among the negatives, I think Ashfaq could have done a lot more to help out the rest of his teammates by tracking back to win the ball instead of staying in Qatar's half all the time. Also, I thought the players, particularly the midfielders were a bit too anxious to play the ball to Ashfaq whenever they received the ball. They should just relax and pass it around before trying to play the killer ball. After all, if the opposition does not have the ball, they cannot score. Also one thing that annoyed me was the playacting by some of our players. No one likes to see that, rolling around on the floor while clutching their face even though everyone knows that there is nothing wrong with them. They do it with the intention of wasting time, but in reality what happens is, the referee adds all of this time to stoppages and delays the end of the match. I hope to see this cut out from our next game against Hong Kong. Let's take this defensive solidity and try to carve out a few good chances against their defense. We can do it!

It was a good game, we tried to play until 70th minute and due to lack of fitness could not carry on and were under pressure, hence the players started to waste time. I honestly think our team would not do that if we were physically fit for this kind of a match. Anyway good luck in the HK game

we have to praise the players but did you saw our team any football through out the match ? where was the attacking game plan of Popov ? Thought atleast we will threat Qatar defense with dhagey and asadullaa but I'm sorry to say nothing was ther ....... Mr Popov is too young to handle a team like Maldives coz we are v much result oriented now , spectators expects morethan this ...... was a big surprise we couldn't attack a single time with Dhagey on the field for 90' ....... shame on Popov and his team
