Kathmandu, NEPAL - Maldives coach Istvan Urbanyi has said that his primary target is to win the tournament.

Speaking to Maldives media today after the final practice before tomorrow’s match he said that his target is to win the tournament and to make the players play according to his directions.

“Our target is to win the tournament, the other target is to play football”

“That’s my responsibility to put the player’s right direction to play football”

He also said that the result will be known after the tournament.

“My happiness will come hopefully after the tournament” expressed his hopes toward the tournament.

He said that tomorrow’s game also will be a special game for him, since this is the first time Maldives will face Sri Lanka after the semifinal clash in 2009 SAFF championship which Maldives won by 5-1.

“Its always a special game. My last senior match was in 2009 semifinal which was a difficult but a good game with a great result”

Urbanyi said that he will try to repeat the performance of 2009 semifinal and it’s important to win the first game.

“I hope we can repeat the performance of that game. Everybody knows it’s a very important thing to have a good start. We are focusing to do that”

We hear from repeated interviews of Istavan Urbanyi how he wants his team to play a short passing game. Well, he has been with national team since 2009 barring some months till he is recalled again. He has had enough time. He knows the players well, their strength and weakness. So it is time he showed us and to the world his passing game. It must have been drilled into their sense by now. We can’t bear to see yet another tournament where keeper take his punt or somebody from defence kick a long ball into the opposition defence thinking our forwards will do the rest. That has spoiled too many of our good chances at the final. That is not the football of 21st century. As for some big weaknesses that we must correct are : A) Our inability to pick out team-mate in the simple touch-and-go situation. ( may be our anxiety makes us too frantic in our decision-making, we keep kicking the ball as if anywhere will do) B) We don’t close down quickly enough the opponents when they are on attack. We give them too much space and time in the dangerous area of penalty area. C) Midfielders don’t release the ball to strikers at the right time or, shall we say, they hold up the ball far too long and when the make a pass it is too late for the forward to penetrate the opposition defence as the opportunity is already gone. D) Giving up hope too easily. If opposition score early in the match our players body language show up, the tell-tale signs make an appearance that the cause they are fighting for is already lost. Their shoulder droops, fall silent, make too many unforgivable mistakes. THSE MUST CHANGE…only then we can make good progress in the tournament. We hope they will do.
