Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives normalization committee chairman Mohamed Shaweed has said that Qatar has agreed to build a new stadium in the Maldives.

“Qatar believed that the Maldives must have a second stadium due to the damage on the pitch of National Stadium and Qatar has agreed to give us a latest FIFA approved pitch with proper drainage system along with a light system.” Shaweed said.

“They said that they will finish the project before February next year. So, we met the ministry and checked a place in Hulhumale yesterday and will do the final inspection today.”

Shaweed also added that under the supervision of an expert from Qatar they have started the work of National stadium pitch.

“We have already started the work of National Stadium pitch and it is believed that within the next two months everything will be perfect. And I would like to say that after two months the pitch would be a FIFA approved synthetic pitch with grass.”

We already have a second stadium in Addu. When they first displayed the proposed changes to Hithadhoo Stadium to the public, it looked pretty nice. There were spectator stands on all four sides and floodlights on all four corners. As usual, someone pocketed most of the funds that had been set for the development, and the only change they made was to slightly lengthen the only existing spectator stand. In the end, they didn't have money to even put up floodlights and had to resort to loan them from Sri Lanka in time for the Challenge Cup. When the Youth and Sports Minister then declared the stadium the "Best in the whole South Asian region", I laughed. I hope the Qataris keep a close eye on this stadium and make sure that all the allocated funds go to the appropriate places.
