Ismail Mahfooz will lead the Maldives against China on 8th September

Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has said that the current assistant coach of Maldives national team, Ismail Mahfooz (Imma) will lead the Maldives against China in the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier next month.

“In the matcha gainst China, Imma will lead the national team and we are working to appoint a coach for the national team as soon as possible.” Normalization committee chairman Mohamed Shaweed said.

“We have discussed the issue in our technical committee and they don’t want to bring a coach just to fill the post soon. They want a reputed high profile coach with a good CV and as you all know it would be very difficult for us to bring such a coach for a long term period. So we will bring a coach for a short term basis. Our main target is to win the SAFF Championship.”

Shaweed also said that even if the appoint a coach for the national team before the match against China, Imma will lead the team.

Does senior players listen to Imma or has Imma listen to senior players. The way things are going in our football we are confused.

I have total faith in Imma but the way FAM has handled Popov's situation, I'm afraid I cannot see the public being too enthusiastic about the China match now. The situation is probably the lowest of the low our team has been - a massive blow, esp. after the ground turf blunder!

This is a guy who turned Maziya from a nothing club to a Maldivian football powerhouse. I like him, he goes on about his tasks quietly unlike many other Maldivian coaches who are brash and are always trying to stir up some controversy. But it's difficult to know exactly how much control he has over the squad. In my opinion, when it comes to the national team, the head coach should have absolute power. The players, FAM and people from other clubs should shut up and let the coach do his job.
