Male’, MALDIVES – New Radaint’s chairman Ali Waheed (Balak) has said that they are the king of the Maldivian football after winning the President’s Cup for the third year in a row, a feat previously achieved only by rivals Victory.

New Radiant won the President’s Cup after beating Club Eagles by 1-0 last night. Substitute player Ali Fasir scored the only goal in the extra time of the game.

“We are the king of Maldivian football after this title. We won FA Cup for three times in a row, we won Dhivehi League thrice in a row and now President’s Cup. So there is no other club in this country who has won all these three tournaments in three years in a row.” The young chairman said after the final match.

He also added that he has achieved what he wanted to do in his term as the chairman of the club.

“I have done what we wanted to do during my term and now we wanted to continue this. We started this year to win the President’s Cup and Dhiraagu Dhivehi League and if we managed to win the FA Cup, it would be a bonus.”

Under the chairmanship of Ali Waheed New Radiant won 7 out of 9 tournaments. They have also finished last season winning all games, a record no team has achieved before.

New Radiant is also the only team that won all domestic tournaments in one season. First in 1997 and then in 2013.

No local team other than New Radiant has also went beyond group stage of AFC Cup. They reached the semi final in 2005 and quarter finals in 2013.

New Radiant also won 36 top division titles in 35 years, which is two more than their rivals Victory achieved in 43 years.

No doubt that they are the best team in the country, if we look at their history or even their current squad. Congratulations to New Radiant, because they deserve it for the effort put in by everyone at the club, from the Chairman to the management, coaching staff and players. However, they still have a lot of work to do to perform well in the AFC Cup next year. Their goals appeared to just dry up since the second round of the Dhivehi League this season. Where once they were scoring goals for fun, they appear to play a more conservative style of football by keeping clean sheets and winning by the odd goal. But I think this has more to do with a stagnating frontline. They need a better finisher than Umair, who is not an out-and-out striker, even though he seems to believe otherwise. I will be very disappointed if they make a repeat of their tame performance in the AFC Cup this year during next season as well. Hope to see both New Radiant and Maziya giving it their all in the AFC Cup and flying the flag of Maldives proudly.
