Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has delayed their extra ordinary congress for tomorrow night at 20:00 hours at Kurumba Maldives.

In a press release from FAM states that the reason for the delay was made because the delegation of FIFA and AFC wants to discuss the ongoing conflict with the government of Maldives.

“FIFA and AFC delegate has held discussions with the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmed Zuhoor and Minister of Home Affairs, Umar Naseer today and ended without any progress. FIFA and AFC delegates have failed to meet registrar of home affairs but we hope that the registrar will be available to meet them tomorrow.” stated in the press release.

“So, we have decided to delay the time to 20:00 hours tomorrow night and we will discuss with the government tomorrow during the office hours to make it happen.”

FIFA has already given the warning of a possible suspension if the government of Maldives is interfering the Football Association of Maldives.

The curse of delay , the fear of suspension, the unavailability of registrar, what is going on? Is there something else at play, somebody adamant to stop this election at all costs? What documents clearance is so important without which the world will come to an end at home ministry, when in many other cases there is so much leeway to wiggle through bureaucracy and red tape, so much latitude to finish the paper work? Why is suddenly everything so difficult, so much so a missing full stop can render everything else irrelevant. There must be something more than meet the eye.

The Ministry of Home Affairs didn't give a fiddler's fart about FAM's changes in their decrees until about three days before the beginning of the scheduled election. Why do they care so much now? The answer is simple; politics. Those tasked with running the Normalisation Committee are reportedly loyal to someone whom the President, who has been getting increasingly paranoid and authoritarian, recently fell out with. Like many other facets of our country, football is getting squashed between the petty power struggle between the political elite. And I fear that the end result is not going to be pretty.
