Normalization Committee chairman, Mohamed Shaweed (C)

Male’, MALDIVES – Football Association of Maldives has cancelled their extra ordinary congress scheduled for tonight because of the relevant governmental authorities failed to provide the necessary approvals for the meeting.

Football Association of Maldives released a press statement few minutes before regarding the cancellation of their extra ordinary congress and the following is the press release from the governing body of Maldives football.

"The FAM extraordinary Congress scheduled to take place on 22 October 2015, during which elections for the FAM executive committee for the upcoming four years were due to take place, must unfortunately be called off because the relevant governmental authorities failed to provide the necessary approvals for the meeting to go ahead."

"Despite the efforts of FAM, FIFA and AFC, the aforementioned approvals were not delivered in a timely fashion thereby forcing this last minute cancellation."

"Consequently, FAM will send FIFA and AFC a detailed and factual account of the current situation. In parallel to this, the FIFA and AFC representatives will make a joint report on meetings held with the FAM Normalisation Committee, the Minister of Youth and Sports, as well as the Minister of Home Affairs these past two days in Male. Based on this information, the relevant bodies - such as the FIFA Emergency Committee - will discuss the appropriate way forward."

"The mandate of the FAM Normalisation Committee, which was established on 2 December 2014 and has already been extended by the FIFA Executive Committee on 25 September 2015, officially ends on 31 October 2015."

Analysis of the details shows that the reasons for not granting approval for the meeting are not serious enough to block the meeting and the election. The governance arrangements could have been amended even after the election and shouldn't have been used to put so much of the national sports at such high risk. Anyway, progressive policy-makers use statutory details to make things happen; not to block development. Those who do the latter have a total misconception of what the law / statute is about.

In the wake this tug of war between FAM and government, home minister had been saying, Shaweed can not run for FAM president as he is already the president of Olympic committee, the parent organisation of all sports. Question is on what ground a sitting MP had become of president of FAM till his unceremonious exit last year. If Ilham can become the president there is no way Shaweed cannot be a president? Why the double standards now?
