Maldives wins opener

Male’, MALDIVES – Maldives U19 team has won their first match in the AFC U19 Championship qualifier against Afghanistan by 1-0. Ahmed Rizuwan scored the winner.

Maldives U19 team manager, Ahmed Ayaz said to maldivesoccer.com just after the final whistle that Afghanistan was the better team during the match but we were lucky to score a goal against them.

“In general Afghanistan was the better team but we managed to score a goal against them on counter attack.”

Ahmed Rizuwan, who is from Dhiffushi scored the winner in the extra time of the first half.

Ayaz also reiterated that Maldives got some good chances to score.

“We got some good chances to score on counter attacks. But Afghanistan played very well and created good chances and our defenders did a good job.”

Maldives will play their second match on Sunday against Jordan.

Congratulations boys, for being the first ever junior team to win a match in a youth qualifier! Next match is their hardest task, though. Jordan will have home advantage and are widely seen as the strongest team in the group. I wish there was more coverage of these matches so that we can see how the future of our football is coming on.
